Discovering the Enchanted Forest in Parauta: A Family Adventure
Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the magical Enchanted Forest in Parauta, and we can’t help but share our experience. This corner of the Serranía de Ronda is perfect for a family getaway and offers a unique connection with nature. Our experience lasted about 3 hours. The best times to take this route are during spring and autumn. In autumn, the leaves of the chestnut trees fall, and the Genal Valley becomes “the Copper Forest”.
Access and Parking
The Parauta town hall has provided a public parking area next to the municipal pool, easily accessible for just 2 euros. This made our arrival much simpler, allowing us to start the trail without worries. We don’t recommend driving into the village since the streets are very narrow and steep. There are restrooms near the trail entrance.
The Trail
The route through the Enchanted Forest is part of the PR-A 222 trail (which is paved), extending for 4 kilometers in a stunning setting among the chestnut trees of the Genal Valley. The estimated duration of the round trip is 2 hours, and although there is a slight incline, the difficulty level is easy, making it a perfect option for families with children (and strollers). At the end of the Enchanted Forest route, you can continue the trail toward Cartajima.
A Magical Experience
As we progressed, we found ourselves surrounded by a landscape that seemed straight out of a fairy tale. The trail is filled with enchanted creatures, making it a magical experience. The children enjoyed every corner, imagining stories about the fantastic beings that could inhabit the forest. The combination of nature and fantasy is simply unmatched. We won’t reveal much more to avoid any spoilers.
Food by the Enchanted Forest
At the start of the route, you can try Miguel’s food, a friendly neighbor who has a food truck at the trailhead. He offers delicious burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches made with local products at reasonable prices. We tried the sandwiches, and they truly did not disappoint; they are plentiful and tasty. Additionally, there are stalls selling typical local products, such as chestnut bread, handmade pastries, and honey. It’s definitely a perfect stop to enjoy local cuisine in this charming village.
There is an option to picnic at the end of the trail, but be aware that as of October 2024, there is only one picnic table available.
Visiting the Village of Parauta
The trail is right next to the village. Within Parauta, don’t miss the beautiful narrow streets with their typical white Malaga houses. The giant pinsapo tree in the center, the Kiss Corner, the main square, the arch, and the medieval quarter where the castle once stood (which no longer exists) are also interesting to see. It’s also worth checking out the statue of Omar Ben Hafsún near Restaurante Anafe. In summary, make sure to explore the charming Mudejar-style streets of this beautiful white village.
Conclusion
Visiting the Enchanted Forest in Parauta was not just a day of hiking; it was an unforgettable family experience. This place is undoubtedly one of the best free family activities to do in Malaga. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines exercise, nature, and magic, don’t hesitate to explore this trail. The entire experience lasted approximately 3 hours.
